A sharp contrast from Chez Shibata‘s extravagant creations, the treats at Mon Chou Chou are simple pleasures. Originally from Osaka, Mon Chou Chou makes a signature Dojima Roll consisting of a special blend of Hokkaido cream rolled with a fluffy sponge cake. This simple but divine treat is wildly popular in Japan – the only time that there’s no queue in front of the store is when the Dojima Roll is sold out. Fortunately for us Shanghai folks, Mon Chou Chou recently opened two branches in town, and as of now, there’s no queue at either location.
There are no seats at either location. After I made my selections, the cakes were placed in the box along with an ice bag to keep the temperature low. The sticker on the box says to refrigerate the cakes and finish them on the day of purchase, but I had some leftovers the next day and they were still delicious.
The simplicity of the Dojima Roll 堂島卷 (32 RMB) showcases the quality of ingredients. The filling, a blend of selected cream from Hokkaido, was delightfully light and perfectly sweet. Snuggly hugging the cream is a soft, fluffy, and deliciously eggy sponge cake. The combination is so simple, so divine.
The Happiness Wrap 福袋 (22 RMB) is an adorable pouch made from velvety soft sweet crepe. Wrapped inside are Dojima Fromage, whipped fresh cream and custard cream. Each element a little joy on its own, and when combined together they make a lovely blend. Soft, smooth, ethereal.
The last dessert I tried – the simplest of all – is the Dojima Fromage (15 RMB), a plain Japanese cheese cake. It has the rich flavor of a typical cheese cake and the fluffy airy texture of a cheese souffle. Lovely.
Though there is a branch in Jiu Guang Department Store in Jing’an, I recommend going to the SWFC branch since the selection is larger and you can purchase the cakes by the slice rather by the roll. Give Mon Chou Chou a try. These plain-looking cakes are surprisingly delicious.
Oh, all that cream looks amaaaaaaazing…
yes it’s absolutely amazing. u have to try!
Wow, the shop in Shanghai is huge! Hehe, but looking just as lovely~
I’ve never tried the one in Shanghai, but the Dojima Roll from the original Mon Chou Chou (at Dojima) is simply amaaaazing! The cream is light as air, yet not overpowered by the sponge cake. Oh and, well, it’s really close from where I work/live too~ XD
niiice u’ve been to the original mon chou chou? not sure if the store in sh is as good as that one but the dojima roll is definitely very satisfying.
light as air, exactly as u say!
i buy it after i read your blog. it taste sooo good. i loves the dojima roll. that much cream but don’t taste heavy at all. the happiness pouch not my taste but my husband like it. the cheese cake to danse for my taste ( not light like Japanese cheese cake ) . but i loveee their pudding , really really really good one of the best i ever tasted. even better than chez shibata or other place in shanghai.
Thanks for the comment! This is a good reminder for me to get some myself. I’ve never tried their pudding either but after reading your comment, I think I need to go this weekend to get some :)
yes you should, they are really good. they just open a new store at metro city as well which is very good for me since it’s very near where i live. they have quite the selection as well like black forest etc. mon chou chou become my fav now after sunflour bakery ( love their bagels&brunch! ).
