Some snapshots from a recent day trip to Capri, a gorgeous island off the Sorrentine Peninsula in Italy.
Staying on Capri can be expensive, so many people (myself included) choose to stay in Sorrento or another town on the Sorrentine Peninsula, and make Capri a day trip. A one-way boat ride from Sorrento to Capri is around €14~18, and takes approximately 20~40 minutes depending on the type of boat you choose. Details here.
Among the many activities to do on Capri, a popular one is to take a boat trip around the island, stopping at the famed Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra). I skipped the Blue Grotto because the wait to go in was long, but the illuminated blue cavern is supposed to be quite magical.
A must-do, in my opinion, is to ride the chairlift from Anacapri up the Monte Solaro.
The view from the top is breathtaking. With these shades of blue, one can barely discern where the sea ends and where to sky begins.
Statue of Emperor Augustus.
Also take some time to explore the meandering alleyways of Capri, which can be accessed from La Piazzetta, a small but busy square located in the historic center of Capri.
Finish the day off with coffee and people watching at La Piazzetta.
We didn’t realize that the last boat going back to Sorrento leaves around 5:30pm, and actually had to catch a boat for Naples, then take the circumvesuviana train back to Sorrento. Lesson learned!
The trip back home was long and winding, but we caught a beautiful sunset on the ride back. It might be all worth it after all.
