Day 2 in Berlin started off on a serious note with a visit to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, a.k.a. the Holocaust Memorial, a site covered with 2,711 concrete slabs arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field.
Then, the Topography of Terror, formerly the headquarters of the Secret State Police during the “Third Reich” and now a documentary center.
Lunch at Mogg & Melzer: Matzo ball soup, pastrami sandwich, and pumpkin salad – delicious.
Berlin landmarks on the sewer cap.
Spent a good hour at Mauerpark for flea market, open air karaoke, graffiti, and swings!
Then, strolled along Oderberger Straße, a lovely street with plenty of shades and cafes.
On this street is Bonanza Coffee, one of the best coffee roasters in Berlin.
Bubble makers at Hackesche Markt.
Aftermath of the war.
Early dinner at NENI, the restaurant up on the top floor of 25hours Hotel Bikini. The food – a melange of Persian, Russian, Arabic, Moroccan, Turkish, Spanish, German and Austrian influences – was not bad, but the design and the view over Berlin Zoo were definitely what drew me in.
Right next door, the Monkey Bar, a cocktail hotspot with the same vast field of green as backdrop.
Tea & T (homemade Earl Grey gin, orange flower water, tonic water) and Park Side Fizz (vodka, orgeat syrup, lemon juice, fresh mint, soda water).
Finished the day with a concert at the famed Berliner Philharmonie.
