If you happen to be in Gubei area, Big Apple is a small Japanese restaurant with excellent ハンバーグ (hamburger patties served without the bun) that you must try. My favorites are the cheese hamburger patty and the Japanese-style hamburger patty. Tender, juicy, full of flavors!
I usually order the set, which comes with soup (vegetable or cream of corn), salad, the hamburger steak, a choice of rice and bread, and a dessert (ice-cream or pudding). Other than the hamburger steak, everything else in the set aren’t really all that great, but they make a nice meal altogether.
Japanese-style hamburger steak (50 RMB with set).
Hamburger steak with egg (50 RMB with set).
Pudding.
When in the mood for something heavy, opt for the cheese hamburger steak with a choice of rice. The sauce is heavier and saltier, a good combination with perfectly cooked Japanese rice. When in the mood for something light, choose the Japanese-style hamburger steak with a choice of bread. The patty is served with a sour sauce, a heap of finely shredded turnips, topped with slices of shiso leaves, and all the flavors mash nicely together.
Big Apple is tucked away in a corner of the Gubei (Wan Ke) Plaza, so it may take you a while to find it the first time. It will be worth the search.
Cheese stakes seems too heavy…big enough.
It’s good :) u should try. But gubei is too out of ur way…
Is it still there? Tried to call but no answer…
Any other Japanese hambagu restaurant in Shanghai?
Hmm I’m actually not sure, I moved away from Shanghai 3 years ago so I don’t have the most updated information. Sorry about that!
