Please note that this is an arranged tasting.

Not much needs to be explained about Shaburi 紗舞縭極品集, the pictures say it all. Apologies for the confusion in pricing – I went with a frequent patron of this restaurant who took care of all the ordering, and he switched around some of the sets so I couldn’t get the exact prices.

U.S. Prime Boneless Short Rib 頂級牛小排 (1080 NTD/set, 850 NTD/a la carte) with beautiful marbling. A very happy sight indeed.

Next, assorted seafood (??? NTD…I’m guessing around 2,500 NTD) so fresh that parts of the platter were still squirming as they arrived at our table. Exciting for some, but perhaps not so ideal for the faint-hearted.

Taiwanese abalone 台灣小活鮑.

Pekoe is a delightful cafe/gourmet ingredient store opened by Taiwanese food writer Yeh Yi-lan (葉怡蘭). It’s located in a quiet neighborhood behind Ren-Ai Circle, very close to a poet and Nomura Sushi. What you can find here: Ippodo hojicha, Christine Ferber jams and jellies, Felsina olive oil, Alsace honey, Amedei chocolates, and the likes. It’s a small but cozy place, a good stopover during any time of the day.

Ippodo Hojicha Tea Latte 一保堂奶泡焙茶 (120 NTD).

I rarely blog about drinks, but the cocktails at Fourplay Cuisine are too fun to not write about. This recently-opened restaurant/lounge has no drinks menu – all you got to do is tell Allen the bartender what flavors you are in the mood of having, and he’ll fix it right up for you. To give you an idea of what to expect at Fourplay, here are a few drinks I tried on my visit. Not too many, just all 14 of them…starting with this lavender mojito (that’s a little tea bag on top).

Ruby heart: herb, strawberry, bitter orange.

Coffee liquor shot, with a marshmallow blazed in Absinthe.

Absinthe + sorghum liquor + honey + unknown fruit + rosemary, tastes surprisingly like white chocolate.

For a picture perfect afternoon tea, visit Season Cuisine Pâtissiartism. There’s room for improvement in terms of flavor, but the whimsically presented desserts are definitely photo-worthy.

Take this for an example. What is this…a potted plant?

Actually, this is a Mint Ice-Cream Pot 薄荷冰淇淋盆栽 (280 NTD), one of the most popular items at Season. It’s comprised of a layer of chocolate crumble (the soil) covering mint ice-cream and chocolate cake. The best part? There’s crackling candy in the ice-cream, which creates a series of popping sensations on the tongue. Very entertaining.

Zenique, a Taiwanese purveyor of 100% organic tea leaves, recently opened a 3-story cafe called Le Salon, boasting a rather attractive concept of integrating Taiwanese tea and French desserts.

The two of us shared an afternoon tea Set A (450 NTD), which includes two cakes, one scone, and a drink valued at 130 NTD or less. First came Milles Feuilles Oolong 烏龍千層酥, which differs from the traditional mille feuille as the custard cream is replaced with a oolong tea/chocolate bavarois. In between the pastries there’s also pineapple orange coulis and lemon sablé, each adding another layer of flavor and texture. Not too bad.

I wasn’t planning on trying any fine dining restaurants in Taipei, a city that is more known for its street food and chic cafes. Somehow I still ended up making a dinner reservation at Justin’s Signatures, an upscale French restaurant by Singaporean celebrity chef Justin Quek, after it’s been recommended to me by a few friends. The meal, unfortunately, turned out to be a fusillade of culinary fireworks that left me dazed but not amazed. It’s true that each dish was beautifully orchestrated with extravagant ingredients, but somehow the end results fell short of expectations.

We were seated right next to the kitchen, and the constant sliding of the kitchen door was disturbing throughout the meal. It also didn’t help that the table next to us were occupied by an especially rowdy crowd.

What gets me up early in the day? A good breakfast, but of course. On my last morning in Taipei, I set out in the drizzling rain to find the city’s best breakfast rice ball. 劉媽媽飯團 (Liu Mama’s), a little hole in the wall on Hangzhou South Rd, is reputed to be the best in its class. So is it worth sacrificing a few hours of sleep for? Absolutely.

Here’s the menu at Liu Mama’s, you can see that there are quite a few options. Basically, you can choose between regular sticky rice and purple sticky rice, and pick from an assortment of ingredients like tuna, sausage, pork chops, cheese, kimchi, smoke chicken, plum, corn, bonito flakes, etc., etc., etc.

But all I wanted was the simple 招牌紫米飯團 signature purple rice rice ball (35 NTD). What’s in it? Braised egg (滷蛋), pickled cabbage (酸菜), dried turnips (蘿蔔干), pork floss (肉鬆), deep-fried dough stick (油條), all wrapped up in sticky, chewy, freshly-cooked purple rice. Nothing fancy, but oh my gosh, what a totally satisfying mouthful.

Another cafe in Taipei for you to add to the list of afternoon hangouts.

The cafe was completely empty when we visited on a Monday afternoon. Quiet, just the way I like it…but of course it packs up easily on weekends.

Nido’s Liuo Liuo Rare Cheese Cake 溜溜雪藏起司蛋糕 (140 NTD), served with rose/peach jam and a little mound of graham cracker crumbles, was excellent. Very tempted to ask the cafe owner for his recipe.

On my last night in Taipei, I found myself congregating with a group fanatic hotpot eaters at Qiao Tou, one of the most popular spicy hotpot restaurants in Taipei. Now you might not know that Taiwanese people have a curious obsession with spicy hotpot, originally a Chongqing specialty…but the group I was with consisted of a few particularly seasoned hotpot eaters who know what they want and how they want it. Let’s fire it up.

There are four soup bases to choose from – spicy, clear, curry, or milk (麻辣, 清湯, 咖哩, 牛奶). Spicy is a must, and for the other side we chose the clear soup, though the milk option also looked quite enticing.

The spicy soup comes with an unlimited supply of tofu and congealed duck blood that have been tumbling and rumbling in the soup base for hours. Thoroughly flavored, satisfyingly spicy.

Fujin Street, a quaint little road close to the Taipei Songshan Airport, is full of stylish surprises – Woolloomooloo being one of them. Open plan, big communal tables, soft lighting, minimal service, delicious coffee. It’s the kind of place that has me lingering for a long long while.
