[Paris] La Belle Assiette

A while back I was invited to a very interesting dinner hosted by La Belle Assiette, a website that allows customers to “shop” for private chefs to cook at the comfort of one’s own home. Before we get into any details, I need to show you the magnificent views from dinner, which took place in a private apartment in the 7th arrondissement. Unobstructed views of Eiffel Tower and the Invalids on a perfect Parisian early summer day…life, sometimes you just can’t complain.

So, a bit on La Belle Assiette. The basic concept is that LBA identifies independent chefs (i.e. not part of a restaurant at the moment) who offers their service to cook for you at home. These can be chefs who previously worked in restaurants, or young talents who recently graduated from culinary schools – all their profiles are up on the website for you to choose. The chef of the dinner I attended was Fabrice Bloch, who, as in the case for all chefs on LBA, took care of everything from shopping for ingredients, cooking, serving, to cleaning up. Sounds good? Sounds very good.

Amuse bouche in the making.

We gathered at the dinner table and started with a few nice bottles. Drinks, by the way, do not come with the chef, so BYOB.

Price: €10~20/meal
Tasted on: May 2013

This is not going to be the best Cantonese food you will ever eat, but for Paris standards it’s really not too bad. For those who are craving lacquered duck, char siu, or wonton noodles, this could be the answer.

Rice with lacquered duck and char siu (approx. €10). The flavor is about right, the meat is tender, the rice not so amazing but acceptable.

From the famed and impossible-to-book Frenchie, Frenchie To Go is a no reservation, 15-seat only casual eatery serving breakfast all day (donuts,  bacon and maple syrup scones, smoked bacon English muffins, etc.) and lunch from noon to 4pm (sandwiches, hotdogs, fish & chips, soups, etc.) The menu is short but very tempting, and everything I tried on this first visit was indeed very delicious.

Summer Sweets in Paris

I started to really miss French pastries during the latter half of my month-long vacation away from Paris, and was (slightly) devastated to find many pastry shops closed for summer vacation upon my return. Fortunately a few good ones remain open, and this page (French only) conveniently lists the current status of most big-named pastry shops. Here are some that might interest you:

Open all summer:

  • Carette
  • Hugo & Victor (boutique on Blvd Raspail open all summer, the others close)
  • La Pâtisserie des Rêves (boutique on rue du Bac remains open all summer, the others close)
  • Pierre Hermé (except a few Sundays, check website for detail)
  • Sadaharu Aoki
  • Sébastien Gaudard

Verjus wine bar was one of the first places I went to after arriving in Paris, but I didn’t make it to the restaurant side until 8 months later. This airy and stylish dining room is run by Braden Perkins and Laura Adrian, an American couple who successfully launched the “Hidden Kitchen” supper club a while back. The cooking, showcased through its monthly-changing tasting menu (€60 not including the optional wine pairing and cheese board), is light, inventive, and elegantly presented.

I’ve once attempted to buy a burger at Le Camion Qui Fume, Paris’ first ever food truck (started in 2011 by fellow Ferrandi graduate Kristin Frederick). The queue looked like this:

I gave up, unwilling to wait for an hour plus for a burger, however delicious it may be. Fortunately, Le Camion Qui Fume came over to Ferrandi just a few weeks after for a “Ferrandi student-only” event. The line, as pictured below, was much more manageable.

Meet Kristin Frederick, a Californian native. Read more about her and other American chefs in Paris here.

Tasted on: Jun 2013

Tugged away in a passage and with white screens draping over its windows, Passage 53 looks uninviting and…closed. But this two Michelin starred, perennially booked restaurant is not intended for passersby anyway. If you do manage to snatch a much-coveted reservation, you will have the chance to taste Shinichi Sato’s precise and inventive cooking using market-fresh produce.

Delicious bread and butter.

On weekdays, Passage 53 offers a €60 four-course lunch set. For dinners and weekend lunch, the menu is €120. Our lunch began with this delightful amuse-bouche…

Please note that I wrote this a month ago so the comments on weather is no longer applicable…

Apparently Spring is not Spring in Paris this year. The weather continues to be cold and rainy even as we approach June, and this miserable, a.k.a. temps de merde, calls for hot soup noodle therapy. Instead of my usual go-to place Sanukiya, I decided to try Yen, a Japanese restaurant in St. Germain-des-Pres well-known for its soba noodles.

Clean and simple interior.

“Nuta Ae” (€15), raw tuna marinated with seaweed and spring onions in miso sauce.

Chicken Salad (€15), chicken salad in citrus and sesame vinaigrette.
