A sharp contrast from Chez Shibata‘s extravagant creations, the treats at Mon Chou Chou are simple pleasures. Originally from Osaka, Mon Chou Chou makes a signature Dojima Roll consisting of a special blend of Hokkaido cream rolled with a fluffy sponge cake. This simple but divine treat is wildly popular in Japan – the only time that there’s no queue in front of the store is when the Dojima Roll is sold out. Fortunately for us Shanghai folks, Mon Chou Chou recently opened two branches in town, and as of now, there’s no queue at either location.

Chez Shibata lured me back with their irresistibly beautiful cakes. Since my previous post, I have tried a few more of their creations:
A specialty of the Chez Shibata Shanghai branch, La Venus (46 RMB), is Araguani 72% chocolate mousse enveloping vanilla bavarois, crispy chocolate pearls, and marinated cherries. The whole thing is then sprayed with red finishing.
The specialty dessert from Chez Shibata Nagoya branch, the Éclair au Caramel Beurre Salé (28 RMB), is an elongated puff pastry filled with caramel cream, brushed with a glistening caramel glaze, and topped with three pieces of Philippe Olivier butter and a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt.

Whisk and Hof dominated the chocolate dessert scene in Shanghai for a long while before Godiva came in with its first ever chocolate cafe concept store in the world. It seems like the cafe is already quite popular, as the spacious 2nd floor cafe area was completed filled up when I visited. Is this because of the prestige, the convenient location, or the actual offerings of the cafe?
The interior is nothing too impressive, but comfortable enough to sit through an afternoon.

Very close to the perennially packed Hof on Sinan Lu, Antique Garden is a two-story cafe that doesn’t only sell coffee and cakes, but also antique furniture (real or fake, I really can’t tell you). The interior is dimly lit and decorated with random vintage pieces here and there. Though the teas and cakes are not extraordinary, Antique Garden is still an alright spot for tea dates and gatherings.
Carefully slip, please.

I love Japanese-French pastries. The alluring colors, fancy garnishes, and flavors out of the ordinary. It just so happens that Chez Shibata, the only patisserie in Shanghai serving such irresistibly beautiful pastries, is a mere 5 minutes away from one of my offices. I must have done a lot of good deeds in my previous life.
Standing in front of the Chez Shibata cake display is an utterly disorienting experience. I never know which one to pick. Fortunately, the waitstaff is quite patient in explaining each dessert, as long as you ask.

The first floor bakery of Manne et Sante’ looks decent enough, but I would’ve never ventured upstairs to the second floor cafe if not led by a friend. The small doorway, the shabby and twisting staircase, the dark interior…there is nothing delightful about the route leading up. Once I pushed open the wooden door to the second floor, however, the sweet aroma of fresh pastry and coffee convinced me immediately that this is a good place to be.
The cafe owner is an acquaintance of my friend, and he came out to personally brew coffee for us. The guy at the next table is obviously jealous that we got special treatment.
Mille Feuille, a three-tier puff pastry tower with cream, fresh grapes, and blueberries sandwiched in between.
Tiramisu.
