In Taiwan, every foodie has his or her own opinion on what constitutes a decent bowl of beef noodles. For me, a good bowl of beef noodles must satisfy three basic requirements: the broth should be rich, slightly spicy, and aromatic with a subtle but evident star anise flavor; the beef, with lots of tendon, should be slow braised for hours until it falls apart in your mouth; and the noodles, whether thin or thick, should be chewy and cooked al dente. While competition for the best beef noodles is ridiculously fierce in Taiwan (there are annual beef noodle festivals that produce top rankings), the scene is much mellower in Shanghai, and Ji Heng easily wins the crown for the best Taiwanese beef noodles in town.
I usually order the 半筋半肉麵 (half tendon half meat noodles, 28 RMB), with sides of 鹵豆腐 (marinated tofu, 12 RMB) and 攪和攪和 (tripe and bean curd, 18 RMB).
The service isn’t the most friendly, but the food is good. It’sa tiny little place, so expect at least a 30-minute wait during prime hours. Nope, no reservations.
service is quite bad there though no?
i didn’t really notice since i didn’t ask for much service…but yes i suppose the person sitting behind the counter wasn’t the warmest.
great noodles
service? i repeat: great noodles
Service is always bad, looking at the taiwanese lady owner makes me not want to return for future visits, but missing beef noodles, this is the best in town..
Have just been there. Noodles now cost 32rmb and are definitely not comparable to authentic Taiwanese ones. Soup was good, noodles rather bland. Marinated tofu was indeed the star of the meal.
Good to hear some updates about this place – it’s been 2 years since I was last there. I wonder if there’s another good Taiwanese beef noodle place in Shanghai…
the beef tendon is still delicious. Maybe the noodle should be improved.
