Huevos! Brunch at Maya is all about the eggs, “happy farm-grown free range eggs”, as highlighted on their menu. Having little knowledge of Mexican food, I am no judge for whether Maya is authentic or not, but it certainly isn’t your typical Mexican joint around the corner. Call it fusion, or traditional with a modern twist, Maya is an upscale restaurant serving refined mexi-Cali dishes. Breakfast burrito, papas con huevos, Mexican omelet, huevos con carne, baked frittata…all under 50 RMB.
We started off with a delicious bowl of homemade guacamole with chips (50 RMB). There’s no other way to begin a meal at Maya.
We tried four different egg dishes, and our favorite was the Pan de Maiz Huevos Benedictos (50 RMB), poached runny eggs over chorizo with a corn muffin and red pepper Hollandaise. Totally satisfying.
Unfortunately the egg dishes went downhill from there. The Huevos Divorciados (45 RMB), served with green and red salsa, refried beans, cheese quesadilla, sour cream salsa, was just alright.
Maya’s Breakfast Burrito (50 RMB), a tortilla wrapping chorizo, eggs, and roasted potatoes topped with salsa and cheddar cheese, was said to be quite bland.
The Mexican Omelet (45 RMB) with roasted peppers, potatoes, caramelized onions, topped with guacamole, was another decent but unmemorable dish.
What would a meal at Maya be without their fantastic churros (50 RMB)? Fried crispy on the outside and sensually softon the inside, the churros are the lightest, airiest I’ve tasted. Dip them in one, two, or all three of the accompanying sauces – chocolate, whipped cream, strawberry – and there’s the perfect ending to an otherwise mediocre brunch.
Though the egg dishes are a bit of a disappointment, the guacamole and the churros made the trip worthwhile. There are also other tempting items on the menu like deluxe avocado ice-cream smoothie and crispy potato skins stuffed with chorizo, cheddar cheese and sour cream that will lure me back again. See brunch menu here and dinner menu here.
It s such a pleasure to have discover your blog today ! It seems to be a true approach of food and exactly what i am looking for ! ie good food only whatever the price, concept, environment or trendyness.
As i couldn t wait to try one of your available recommendation for a booking on sunday morning for the brunc, i headed to Maya.
Guacamole is amazing and potato skin stugg with chorizo is quite intersting if you like a bit spicy, service is good but a bit slow due to lack of staff
There sangria is also very tasty and very fresh. It finally deserves the 50 kuai per glass which seems a bit expensive on the menu.
I would say a confortable place for a brunch whith some interesting dishes worhting the price you will pay at the end.
I will head back one more time !
But my main thing today is THANKS sugarednspiced to exist ! i am so happy to have found a true, honnest and passionated food lover blog.
Hi Julianihio, thanks for comment :) I haven’t been to Maya for brunch since I wrote this post, and seeing your note does make me want to go back again..
The Sunday brunch is really great there !
2nd time to go there last week and I really enjoy it (guacamole, eggs benedictine and chicken quesadillas are really yummy)
go for the after brunch coffee on the sofa near the bar and it s almost holiday mood with the lovely music…
Btw, the fresh sangria is the best I know in shanghai!
i love maya brunch and often come there. for me their best are their steak and egg for the brunch and cevice for dinner.
I live in the same compound from Maya but am moving out this weekend, might go for one last brunch there while it’s still a 15-second walk away ;)
When are you coming back to Shanghai, Cindy?? I can’t wait to go food exploring with you again!
