For an artery-clogging but truly satisfying meal, go to NY Style Steak & Burger and order The Manhattan Monster. The beef patty itself is made with not much else other than good meat, and is accompanied by crisp bacon, cheddar cheese, fried egg, firehouse chili, onions rings (a little mountain of ’em), lettuce, pickles, and tomato. Served with a side of fries, this burger will fill you up no matter how hungry you are.
The restaurant is slightly hard to find. If you know where Q’s Coffee is, just walk down the small alley to the right of it and you’ll arrive at NY Style Steak & Burger.
We tried The Manhattan Monster (65 RMB) and The Brooklyn BBQ (55 RMB), which were very similar in their architecture. I loved both almost equally, but if forced to choose, I would opt for the Monster for the firehouse chili and fried egg. As you can easily tell from the portion and ingredient list of these burgers, they are not ideal for the calorie counters.
To eat a burger this monstrously thick, you really have to smash the whole thing to a thinner and more manageable piece. As the cross section shows, the onion rings take up a good portion of the burger and probably a fair share of the calorie count, but they are what make these burgers so sinfully delicious. We also tried the Firehouse Chili (25 RMB), a thick stew made from both minced and whole pieces of beef, served in a toasted bread bowl. Very filling.
Eating at NY Style Steak & Burger is an juicy, oily, and extremely messy affair. Come here for some supremely delicious burgers, but don’t pick this place for a first date.
Well, if you miss the burger, you should absolutely go to this place! It’s quite a maze you will go through to find this restaurant, but it’s worth it.
For directions, you can take metro line 8 and get off at Dapuqio Road (exit# 1) and you will see an alley across the street. Just get inside that alley and look for lane 155.
bistro burger has gone downhill in my opinion — and more quickly than i would have expected, even in shanghai. i had a positive experience after they first opened, and went back a few months later to find that their tuscan burger, originally my favorite, was rubbery, flavorless, and oily — and it seemed like they’d replaced the “garlic aioli” with plain old mayonnaise and were hoping no one would notice. except i did.
they also stopped serving the extra shake in the tin shake container (which had always earned bonus points from me).
ny steak and burger >>> bistro burger now, imo.
thx for the update. i haven’t gone to bistro burger in almost a year? now i know i should head straight to ny steak & burger next time. ahh my arteries.
I would be interested to hear how you think Piro’s burgers compare to NY Steak & Burger….
These are the first photos that I’ve seen of NY Steak & Burger’s burgers. I’m not convinced that these can be considered burgers anymore.
About Bistro Burger, their milkshakes are quite incredibly good.
Haven’t had a chance to try Piro yet. Worth a trip?
I understand that NY Steak & Burgers and Piro are considered the two best burger offerings in Shanghai, today. If you love burgers, yes, check it out! I’m curious about what you think…
VIOLENTLY SICK! I had high hopes for this restaurant after reading that it was deemed the best burger in Shanghai. Within hours of ordering the Manhattan and Brooklyn burger, my friend and I got violently sick. It took almost three days to recover. I later sent and email to the chef, Adam, no response. I don’t know what happened to this restaurant, not only is their meat NOT FRESH, but they do not care.
Hi Burgerlover, so sorry to hear about your experience. I haven’t been to NY Style since I wrote this post 2.5 years ago…it’s too bad that the quality is no longer consistent!
