When you walk into Candelaria, you probably wouldn’t think much of this tiny taco restaurant. The space is tight, with no more than 5 seats at the bar and 6 seats at the table. The kitchen is open and bare, with a short menu casually scribbled on blackboards. But this was where I found myself on a Sunday evening with Carin, Diane, Edna, & Milsters, and honestly, after our afternoon of sweets and champagne (more on this in another post), some guacamole and tacos were exactly what we needed.
Guacamole (€5.50), not the best I’ve had, but still quite tasty.
Cochinita pibil tacos (€6/two pcs). Liked the braised pork and cheese, but not a fan of the corn tortillas (as I generally prefer wheat tortillas, which are more elastic and less “sandy” in texture).
Hongos tacos (€5.50/two pcs) with mushrooms and cheese. Same comment as above.
Nopal tostada (€3.50). This one has got all the elements I love – refried beans, melted cheese, cactus, all on top of a crispy fried tortilla.
Hot sauce for those who need it.
That’s it? Not really. Candelaria actually comes in two parts, and behind an unmarked door beyond the kitchen is a hidden cocktail den that apparently serves some wickedly good drinks. Expect another blog post on this later.
