Everyday, a queue forms outside each of Le Relais de l’Entrecôte’s locations 30 minutes before they open, and those in line are there for only one thing – steak frites. Intrigued? Here’s the rundown. Step 1: Arrive at the restaurant 30 minutes before it opens (12pm for lunch, 7pm for dinner), and get in the queue.
*3 locations available in Paris, check website for detail.
Step 2: Get seated. No menu will be presented, simply make your choice when the waitress asks you: “medium or well done?”
Step 3: Start the meal with a lettuce walnut salad (included with the steak).
Step 4: Dig in to your steak frites (€25.80), which will be presented in two servings – the second will be automatically put on your plate as you finish the first.
Now, a little bit on the sauce. Parisian newspaper Le Monde reports that the sauce at Le Relais de l’Entrecôte is made from chicken livers, fresh thyme and thyme flowers, cream, white Dijon mustard, butter, and water, plus salt and pepper (details here), and this sauce is apparently key to the steak’s popularity.
The kitchen even slices the meat up in convenient stripes for you…
Optional: wine. Pictured: Cuvée du Relais de l’Entrecôte (€10.40/37.5cl).
Optional: dessert. Pictured: Tulipe de fraise (€6.50).
Last words: this is far from the best steak frites that I’ve eaten, but is worth a try for the experience. An especially good choice when all you want is steak, sans reservation.
Just get ready for the perpetual queue.
Wonderful post, I actually like this place but mainly because I haven’t tried other steakfrites places in Paris. Is there any steakfrites place in Paris you can recommend? I’m in dire need of a good steakfrites.
Thank you xxx Grace
Not a steakfrites connoisseur myself but have came across this post before: http://parisbymouth.com/five-great-steak-frites/ Perhaps some of the names on there could be good? :)
