A small, delicious, and affordable eatery by French master chef Christian Constant. The specialization here is, as the name very clearly indicates, dishes served in cocottes, or mini cast iron pans. It is open everyday for lunch and dinner, but I personally prefer coming here for lunch since the space tends to get too packed and slightly uncomfortable during dinner time.
We started with Entrée du Jour (€9), a scallops and black pudding tart served on a bed of greens. Would’ve been better if served hot rather than lukewarm.
All cocottes used here are from Staub, by the way.
I chose the Cocotte du Jour (€16), which was duck breast topping mashed sweet potato and sautéed mushrooms. The flavor combination was lovely, but the duck was a bit tough to chew.
I actually preferred my friend’s beef shoulder cooked in red wine with parsley potatoes (€19), which was braised to such a tenderness that it easilly fell apart at the knife.
For desserts, the fabulous Christian Constant chocolate tart (€10) was indeed fabulous. Creamy, smooth, dense, slightly too sweet for my palate but still within the range. Tart shell is delicately thin and not at all dampened by the chocolate filling.
With great food at reasonable prices, it’s no wonder that Les Cocottes is so popular. No reservations, come early to avoid the queue.
