Pho 14 is certainly the most famous pho joint in Paris, but is it the best? Can’t say, since the only other place I’ve been to is Le Kok (just a few steps from Pho 14). But anyway, apparently Maggie Cheung also ate here when she was in Paris, so maybe you should too.
Phở boeuf special (€8.50/large €7.90/small) is for those who want a bit of everything: rice noodles with slices of rare steak, well done flank, tripe, and beef balls in soup. Mmm, perfect on a chilly day (and Paris has certainly got many degrees chillier within just a few days!)
Condiments: lemon, chilis, dipping sauce.
Tsing Tao beer, why not.
For a bit of extras, a great appetizer/side dish is Chả Giò (€6.80), deep-fried rolls stuffed with ground pork or chicken. Wrap it in a lettuce and dip it in the sweet and sour sauce. Yum.
For something lighter, try the Bánh Cuốn (€6.80), which is steamed vietnamese dumpling wrapping mashed pork, black mushrooms, and served with vietnamese pork ham.
For a sweet ending, we had Dao Do (€3.60), a glass of red beans with coconut milk and cane sugar. Not bad.
It’s been half a year since I ate at Le Kok so I can’t exactly say which one is better in terms of food – both places make delicious pho – but the wait at Pho 14 is longer and its pho doesn’t come with free meat, so perhaps I’d still go for Le Kok next time . If you still want to try Pho 14 for its fame/nicer interior, get there slightly early to skip the line (we arrived at 7:30pm on a Monday evening and managed to get two seats without much hassle).
