Lunch at the newly revamped Crystal Jade in Westgate Mall. I’d never been to Crystal Jade before the renovation so I can’t really compare, but the new look is quite pretty in shades of grey and blue-green, with lots of mirrors all over. The menu has also gone through much scrutiny, resulting in a more concise list of classic and modern Cantonese dishes.
(118 RMB), a trio of BBQ pork with manuka honey, crackling pork belly, crispy roasted duck Very good.
Steamed Black Truffle and Prawn Dumpling (8 RMB/piece).
Steamed Minced Pork Patty with Squid Ink (88 RMB) is a dish I haven’t tasted before. Pork belly is first minced then mixed with chopped water chestnut, diced eel, and squid ink. Flavor and texture both excellent.
Shrimp Dumpling 虾饺 (10 RMB/piece).
(10 RMB/piece), snow-white buns encasing French foie gras, black truffle, and cream custard. A signature dish at Crystal Jade, though not a favorite of mine.
Baked Chicken with Black Truffle (RMB 128). Chicken thigh pan-fried till golden, then mixed with an assortment of mushrooms sautéed in black truffle sauce. Served sizzling hot and smelling like heaven. I especially enjoyed the mushrooms…but yes the chicken was delicious too.
Vegetables, sadly a bit overcooked.
Sauteed Australian Sirloin Beef Cubes with Red Wine Vinegar (RMB 298) – I was too full by this point, but my fellow lunchers seemed to have enjoyed this dish.
Poached Rice in Lobster Soup with Crispy Rice (138 RMB/pot, 88 RMB/half a pot). A rich lobster broth with prawns, diced greens, fried pork skin, steamed rice, and crispy rice. Excellent flavor from the broth and interesting texture from the crispy rice, a lovely ending to the meal.
A good place for Cantonese food at a reasonable price. Count 150-200 RMB per head for a meal.
