Mellower Coffee is a local Chinese chain that popped up about a year ago in Oct 2014, and is apparently very serious about its coffee. While coffee connoisseurs go for the real deal (AeroPress, Chemex, V60, ice drip etc.), most customers – myself included – go simply to try a drink called “sweet little rain”, consisting of Americano served with a piece of cotton candy hovering above it. Details below.

Why yes, that is a piece of cotton candy cloud raining sugar into my coffee. As the steam from the coffee heats the cotton candy, it melts and drips, thereby sweetening the coffee. Super cute presentation and idea, but the result is mediocre coffee (inevitably you have to wait for the cotton candy to melt, and that means lukewarm coffee by the time you get to it) and a sticky coffee cup that’s messy to hold.

As I attempted to sip on my coffee, I observed a stream of “sweet little rain” being sent out from the counter and dispatched to almost every table – it was actually quite a comical sight. I’m happy to have tried this once, but it probably won’t happen again anytime soon…

  1. I saw this on your instagram and wonder how you thought about it, and if it’ll result into a messy sugar disaster ;P though i’ll still give a shot for it to see how the rain drop, hehe
Would the “sweet little rain” too sweet for coffee?

    1. Hi Tiff, thanks for your comment :) Like I mentioned in this post, it’s quite messy with sugar on the cups, and the coffee is lukewarm by the time you get to it since you have to wait for the sugar to melt, but it’s a lovely presentation and I would recommend going once to see what it’s like, not really for the taste.

  2. Thanks SugerednSpiced for replying! I’ll deft go try in out when I visit Shanghai, and totally understand to see how it’s presented not the taste ;)
