Woolloomooloo’s original store in Fujin Street is such a lovely spot, and it’s no surprise that when they opened a 2nd location in the city center, it became one of the most popular eateries around town. The decor is more industrial than its original store (think concrete and steel), but the ambience is softened by plenty of wooden furniture and warm diffused lighting. The 2-story structure is quite a big space – let’s take a tour!
The first floor houses the kitchen, the service bar, a few tables, and a play area for kids.
Cakes on display.
Not quite sure what this is but it looks yum.
Let’s go up to the 2nd floor.
Long communal tables, even longer than the one at the original store.
If you prefer a bit more privacy, you can reserve one of the few individual tables as well.
Cute chair design, with a place to hood your bag or umbrella.
Book shelves, with lots of kids’ readings.
Interesting dish names on the menu :)
Moving on to the food. My anchovies pizza (460 NTD) was a hit, with a chewy crust and the perfect amount of toppings.
A friend’s meat pie (250 NTD), whimsically named “me, pie please”. Pie crust was nice and flaky, but the filling was a bit bland.
Another friend’s “Love is a pho Vietnam” (250 NTD). From the look of her face and how much was left over, this was not a satisfactory bowl at all.
Despite the hiccups in food, we all found some reassurance in our cups of coffee. Here’s a caffe latte maggiore (140 NTD), which is latte with extra milk, and below is a…I’m not sure…mocha (150 NTD)?
Banana cream pie (150 NTD) was lovely. Starting at the bottom is a tart shell, topped with fresh banana chunks, cream, cookie crumbles, then a drizzling of chocolate sauce.
Earl grey chiffon cake (120 NTD) was less tasty. I’m a big fan of the earl grey flavor, but the cake itself was dry and punctuated with bits of earl grey tea leaves that added an unpleasant texture.
Food at Woolloomooloo WXY can be a hit or miss – I was happy with only about half of the items we ordered – but the ambiance is charming enough to lure me back. The restaurant was quite rowdy during lunch rush, but it calmed down to a very pleasant level once the afternoon sets in, and that’s probably when you can find me here in the future.
